چکیده

This paper considers the link capacity requirement for an LEO satellite constellation. We model the constellation as an N N mesh-torus topology under a uniform all-to-all traffic model. Both primary capacity and spare capacity for recovering from a link or node failure are examined. In both cases, we use a method of ‘cuts on a graph’ to obtain lower bounds on capacity requirements and subsequently find algorithms for routing and failure recovery that meet these bounds. Finally, we quantify the benefits of path-based restoration over that of link-based restoration; specifically, we find that the spare capacity requirement for a link-based restoration scheme is nearly N times that for a path-based scheme. Capacity Provisioning, Failure Recovery and Throughput Analysis for Low Earth Orbit Satellite Constellations

We investigate the capacity needed to build a restorable satellite network and design routing schemes to achieve high throughput. Speci cally, the rst part of this thesis considers the link capacity requirement for a LEO satellite constellation. We model the constellation as an N N mesh-torus topology under a uniform all-to-all traÆc model. Both primary capacity and spare capacity for recoverin...

Staged Deployment of Communications Satellite Constellations in Low Earth Orbit

The “traditional” way of designing constellations of communications satellites in low Earth orbit is to optimize the design for a specified global capacity. This approach is based on a forecast of the expected number of users and their activity level, both of which are highly uncertain. This can lead to economic failure if the actual demand is significantly smaller than the one predicted. This ...

Effects of Some Parameters on Thermal Control of a LEO Satellite

Satellite thermal control ensures safe operating temperature ranges for satellite components throughout the mission life. Effects of altitude, spin, and position of satellite radiator(s) on the thermal control of a small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite have been studied. Results show that change in satellite altitude, in the range considered here, does not produce critical thermal conditions. H...

Theatre in the Sky: a ubiquitous broadband multimedia-on-demand service over a novel constellation composed of quasi-geostationary satellites

To meet an ever-growing demand for wideband multimedia services and electronic connectivity across the world, development of ubiquitous broadband multimedia systems is gaining a tremendous interest at both commercial and academic levels. Satellite networks will play an indispensable role in the deployment of such systems. A significant number of satellite communication constellations have been ...
